Graphic Novel Review: Seconds

seconds

We all make mistakes. That’s one of the fall outs that come with being human. From forgetting to take the cookies out of the oven before they burn to crashing your car after forgetting to put your snow tires back on, there isn’t a human in the world who hasn’t done something stupid that they regret. While some mistakes are small and easy to forget, others can have huge and life-altering repercussions. Like most people, there are more then a few mistakes in my past that I would like to change, but unfortunately what’s in the past is there to stay.

But what if we could make it so that our mistakes had never happened? What if we were given a second chance to change the outcome of our lives? That’s what Brian Lee O’Malley (the author of the Scott Pilgrim series) has decided to explore in his latest graphic novel Seconds, and it’s absolutely fantastic!

Seconds focuses on Katie, a young chef who is in the midst of finally opening her own restaurant. Unfortunately, not everything is going as planned. The contractor at the new restaurant is falling behind on his renovations, her ex-boyfriend makes an awkward appearance at her place of work, and her fling with another chef is starting to cause some trouble. Katie is given a second chance, however, when a mysterious girl appears in her bedroom and leaves behind a mushroom and a notebook. All Katie has to do is write down her mistake, eat a mushroom, go to sleep, and she’ll wake up as if it had never happened.

Sounds simple enough right? Well, as you can expect, things start to go horribly and irrevocably wrong. As Katie begins to consume more and more mushrooms her life begins to change so much that it isn’t even recognizable anymore. The result is a gripping and comical story that I couldn’t put down!

I loved pretty much everything about Seconds! From the full-colour illustrations, which were gorgeous, to the fun and zany characters that you can’t help but adore, everything was absolute perfection! While the story was extremely predictable, it was still entertaining, and I really enjoyed getting to see how Katie’s life would change after each mistake that she fixed.

Final Verdict: Seconds is a fantastic read that I highly recommend! If you’ve never read a graphic novel before, this would also be a great place to start! It’s light, fun, and a super quick read! I’m already craving a second helping of Seconds! (I know… a terrible pun but I couldn’t help it!)
